Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a hallucinogen. This drug drastically alters a person’s thoughts and perception of reality. LSD has many different names. It is also known as acid, blue heaven, yellow sunshine or blotter. Originally, this illegal drug gained popularity for its mind-altering effects. When someone takes LSD, he or she feels like she has lost touch with reality and may experience delusions filled with vibrant colors and fanatical images. Because of the potential euphoric experience, LSD has a high potential for psychological addiction.1
A high on LSD and other hallucinogenic experiences are called “trips,” and a bad or terrifying high is called a “bad trip.” On some trips, people experience sensations that are enjoyable and mentally stimulating.

- Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD)- HPPD can develop after a single use of LSD. This disorder of the mind is the inability to think or communicate rationally. Other traits include unpredictable behavior, severe mood swings, paranoia and violent behavior.
- Mental illness- Mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia can be triggered by LSD use.2
